Meeting Doctor Bob New Orleans Folk Artist
We had the honor of meeting Doctor Bob New Orleans, the last time we were in Willie’s neighbourhood of the Bywater. Dr. Bob’s Art Gallery is located on Chartres Street. When we stopped in we were lucky enough to meet Dr. Bob himself as well as his friend, George (pictured below).
Dr. Bob, half Crow Indian and half French/German, is a self-taught artist born in Kansas, but eventually relocated to New Orleans via Lake Pontchartrain. His utilization of found objects in his work, along with his own unique painting style, have combined into one of the most recognizable and respected representations of New Orleans and Louisiana folk art in the world. He popularized the phrase “Be Nice or Leave” in his paintings/signs which have made a permanent place in the subculture of the city.
Thanks again Dr. Bob for welcoming us to your gallery!
Stopping by Dr. Bob New Orleans Art Gallery is a must for anyone in the area:
